10k & 50k

Beautiful single-track course will take runners through the winter wonderland of Veteran Acres and Sterne’s Woods, in Crystal Lake, Illinois.

There’s no race like Gnome! VERY CHALLENGING, TRIPLE BLACK DIAMOND rated, fun and frosty run in Crystal Lake on January 11th, 2025.

The Frozen Gnome’s beautiful single-track course will take runners through the winter wonderland of Veteran Acres and Sterne’s Woods. Folks may choose either the 50K ultra run or the 10K race for speedsters. Gnome doubt about it, both courses will be tough.

The course is a 10k loop that will be repeated 5 times by the 50k runners. Enjoy Butt Slide Hill, hot food, coffee, heat, and volunteers at the Gnome Depot Aid Station.

The Frozen Gnome is everything you could wish for from a winter wonderland race!

Park at the main lot of Veteran Acres north of 176 at 431 Walkup Road. The race start line is at the park shelter north of the tennis courts and baseball field. (start line gps coordinates: 42.255179, -88.319793) 

The course is mainly single track trails on a lot of hills. It's a 10k loop that will be repeated 5 times for the 50k runners. There is one main aid station "The Gnome Depot" at the start-finish line that will be stocked with hot soup, homemade goodies, coffee and drinks. There is one unmanned aid station with sports drink on the course. You can see your runner at start/finish line every loop.

The cutoff for both races is 8 1/2 hours which will be 4:15 pm.  No pacers, human or dogs.

  • Finding the starting line: 431 Walkup Road, Crystal Lake, IL 60014

  • Veteran Acres park is on Walkup Road a short distance north of Route 176.

Race Day Packet pick up at Veteran Acres. We will be inside the Concession Stand near the large parking lot, by the sledding hill.

Friday Packet pick up:

  • Ornery Mule Racing Trail Head/Headquarters

  • 824 S. Main Street Unit 102, Crystal Lake, IL

  • 5 to 8 pm

Race morning:

  • Packet pick up 6 to 7:40 am

  • small concession building. Signs will be up

If you arrive early for packet pick up and are looking for somewhere less Frozen Gnomey to hang out, there is a Starbucks a couple of blocks away (so you will want to drive). The address is 40 N Williams Street, Suite A, Crystal Lake, IL 60014. There is also a Panera Bread Company at 6000 NW Highway (Route 14) in Crystal Lake.
